Coastal Cleanup Day

By Deirdre Brannigan:

What’s your favorite thing to do in September? One of our anticipated fun days is the annual Coastal Cleanup Day - this year happening on September 21. The California Coastal Commision has been hosting this event since 1985! Impressive, right? Fun fact: “In 1993, California Coastal Cleanup Day was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “largest garbage collection” ever organized, with 50,405 volunteers.”

There are many local beaches in Santa Barbara County that are being cleaned up. The California Coastal Commission (the agency spear-heading this effort) has a map which shows area beaches, contact info for local coordinating organizations, and info about registering. You can check the map here, to get more information.

Recently our Sustainable Future member Deckers Brands spent some time on Goleta beach collecting approximately 3900 cigarette butts. This type of thing is fantastic! I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but litter of this sort is hugely detrimental to the ocean. Thank you Deckers for being a good neighbor, and a business leader for sustainability measures.

Which beach will You clean up this year? Be sure to tag us on social media so we can see what you are up to.
